Reading Rockets have submitted an application to join the British Basketball League. We have passed the initial assessment and now have to submit a comprehensive business plan and full financial model, coupled to a marketing and PR programme.
Rockets’ chairman Gary Johnson feels now is the right time for the club to move up into the top flight. "We have submitted the initial application which has been accepted, now we have to prepare our full application within the next two weeks, so we’re seeking key partners and sponsors to agreements with other stakeholders as well as support from our venue, Rivermead Leisure Complex".
Since formed in 1997 the club has had outstanding success. They have won every major honour in the English Basketball League, including winning the Division One title, finishing runners up on no less than four occasions, winning the National Trophy four out of the last five seasons and also winning the Play-off Championship on three occasions and being runners-up three times. The team also made basketball history in 2008/9 by winning every single competitive game ending up with four National trophies in the cabinet.
The club runs 11 national teams of all ages with the Ladies sitting proudly at the top of Division Two and having reached the semi-final of the National Cup this season. The community programme is among the best of any sports club in the country, with seven satellite clubs and numerous school, health, and community programmes in and around the town.
